HAGLEY ROTARY
Our Cabaret Evening in mid February was a great success raising over £1,000 for local charities. Dave Huband, the comedian, was very amusing and over 120 friends of Rotary enjoyed our annual event at the Hagley Community Centre.
Rotary International is helping to ease the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people affected by the Haitian earthquake. We are all collecting and donating money which will be given directly to Rotary Clubs in Haiti to cut out the middle men. Also to pay for the Shelter Box Charity Scheme which is in full swing, giving practical relief to the devastated communities. Shelter Box was used to good effect in the Indonesian Sunami, Hurricane Katrina and the Burma Flood disasters.
Humanitarian aid is delivered in iconic green boxes which each contain a tent for up to 10 people, a stove, blankets, a water purification kit and other items essential for survival. Each box costs £490, including all materials, storage, transport and distribution; this equates to less than 30p per person per day. Nearly 300 boxes were flown in at the end of the first week and a further 1,000 delivered after a fortnight. This will continue as long as necessary.
If you would like to find out more about Rotary please call me, and come and visit us one Monday evening at the Stone Manor Hotel.
