HAGLEY THEATER GROUP
Triffids have made a comeback and with Spielberg's recent revival of The War of the Worlds there seems to be much interest in alien life forms having a healthy appetite for a bit of Homo sapiens. This theme is also explored in the Theatre Group's latest production, of the modern classic The Little Shop of Horrors by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. But there's much fun to be had with this comedy musical about a failing downtown florist's shop which acquires a strange looking plant. The shop's hapless worker, Seymour Krelborn, tries to nurture the plant which he names Audrey II after his fellow shop worker Audrey who he is secretly in love with. The plant seems to be dying despite Seymour's efforts until he discovers that the plant seems to respond to drops of blood after he accidentally pricks his finger on a thorn. Seymour keeps the reasons for the plant's revival a secret. As Audrey II grows, the plant becomes an attraction and as the florist's business grows so too does the plant's appetite. How can Seymour satisfy the plants vocal demands to be fed? Could Audrey's abusive boyfriend Orin Scrivello, a sadistic dentist, provide the answer? The lively music keeps the pace racing along with several show-stoppers including Skid Row (Downtown, Somewhere That's Green, Suddenly, Seymour.
