UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE

Like other academic institutions the U3A ends its year with displays of work from the study groups, but with no degrees, awards or prizes to compete for it does not need to take the occasion too seriously. French? Get everybody to sing Frere Jacques in two part ‘harmony’. Discussion? Argue the merits of supposed new Hagley byelaws insisting on the feeding of foxes to improve our natural habitat; or have public conveniences erected in the High Street to succour the aged and infirm. More serious fare came with a selection of poems from Gardening and Literature and readings on love, intemperance and age from Philosophy. Music demonstrated a continuum from rock to classical and we heard from Genealogy how the discovery of illegitimacy in one family tree led to a lost relative in New Zealand and links to a prosperous business in the west country. Painting and Digital Photography showed the results of their learning, while the party food and chat demonstrated the social value to all its members of this University.
