The Village Notice Board

Last December, members of our orchestra played in a ‘Sanctuary at Christmas’ concert in Kidderminster Town Hall, in aid of homeless charities. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at this Gala evening, with Central England Ensemble, Bewdley Choral Society and 3 excellent soloists (Paula Downes, Elizabeth McDonald and Alan Fairs) conducted by Anthony Bradbury.  We are very grateful to the Hagley people who came to support us.  Anna Downes, founder of the ‘Music for Sanctuary’ charity, was able to write a cheque for £2,881 to the Salvation Army, from the proceeds of the concert.

Our resident keyboardist, composer Andrew Downes, celebrates his 70th birthday this year. A series of commemorative concerts are going to be taking place throughout the year in his honour.  The first is on Saturday 8 February at  7.30pm in the brand-new Elgar Concert Hall, Bramall Building, Birmingham University. Central England Ensemble will be performing Celtic Rhapsody by Andrew, with soprano soloist Paula Downes.  Also in the programme will be Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No 2. Tickets are available at Eventbrite at £5 each plus a donation to Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research.  A number of our Hagley Community Orchestra members will be playing.

Hope to see you there! Cynthia Downes
